Tribal Desires

Meet the dancers of Tribal Desires

Kali is a dancer and teacher of Improvisational Tribal Style and  Tribal Fusion belly dance.  She is founder and Co-director of Tribal Desires, a Tribal Fusion/ Tribal Improv troupe based in Charleston, WV.

Although Kali began belly dance classes in 1995, she began her "tribal" dance lessons  in 1997 with a 10-day trip to California to take classes from Carolena Nericcio, world-renowned director of FatChanceBellyDance and the creator of the style known as American Tribal Style.  Once formally introduced to the tribal style of dance, Kali knew that it was to become her passion.

Upon returning to West Virginia she was able to continue her pursuit of the tribal format by studying ethnic/folkloric dance with Ami Lamborn, and by traveling to dance workshops in nearby states.  Later, Kali became a student of Narah, a Tribal Fusion Style teacher, and had the honor of dancing in her student troupe, Tribe of Fires.

Kali's unique approach to this beautiful style of dance is the result of her many influences through workshops and classes.   Kali has attended classes/workshops of world-renowned instructors such as Morocco (of New York), Conchi (of Ohio), Arish Lam (of Puerto Rico) and Amaya (of New Mexico), as well as from widely acclaimed and highly honored instructors such as Jill Parker, director of Ultra Gypsy (CA), Zi’ah director of Awalim Dance Company (GA), the Urban Tribal Dance Company (CA), Teresa Tomb, director of Radkadu Gypsy (KY), Neefa and Safa of Khafiff (PA), Shakira (OH), Phyllidia (KY), Maja, the Girl from the Nile, director of Gypsy Tribe (FL), Taletha (KY) and Eyesah (a former Miss America of Belly Dance).  Related dance training includes instruction in Congolese and West African dance.

Kali is honored to have been a student of Narah bint Durr and to have taken workshops and classes from the various instructors named above.

Aja is a dancer and student-teacher of Improvisational Tribal style and Tribal Fusion bellydance. She is a troupe member and co-director of Tribal Desires, a Tribal Fusion/Tribal Improv troupe based in Charleston, WV.

Aja first fell in love with bellydance at a Renaissance Faire where the ancient feeling of the bright folkloric costuming and music sparked a love-affair that has never ended. After that she began her search for a teacher and contacted Narah Bint Dur. Narah referred Aja to Kali and she has been studying with her since October of 2004 when she bought herself lessons for a birthday present. She has been a member of Tribal Desires since it began in February 2005.

In addition to weekly classes with Kali, Aja has been fortunate to have been able to attend classes/workshops with Fat Chance Belly Dance (CA) and Megha of Devani Dance Company (GA), Rachel Brice (CA), Narah Bint Dur (WV), Ziah Ali of Awalim (GA), Domba, Odessa, Conchi (OH), Arish Lim (Puerto Rico) and Gypsy Caravan, all of whom have influenced her dance.

Aja has been honored to have danced at the Fire of the Soul Tour (2005); Renaissance Faire at Tamarack in Beckley, West Virginia; Raq the Casbah, Beckley, West Virginia; Mediterranean Echoes in Cincinnati, Ohio; CultureFest at Pipestem, West Virginia along with various other public and private events.

Serafina began taking classes from Kali in early Autumn 2005, searching for a positive, healthy hobby. What she found was an artistic and spiritual outlet and a beautiful way to celebrate femininity. She has since become a member of Tribal Desires and has performed with the troupe at Mediterranean Echoes in Cincinnati, OH, Culture Fest in Pipestem, WV, and various events at Tamarack in Beckley, WV.

Kamaria began taking instruction in October 2004 with an invitation from Kali to try a dance that fit.  Within this dance Kamaria has found a deeper spirituality, rediscovery of herself and a deep lasting bond with a wonderful group of women in Tribal Desires.

Kamaria was one of the original members in the student preforming group. She has had the honor of attending class/workshops from Kali, WV; Narah Bint Dur, WV; Ziah Ali of Awalim,GA; Conchi,OH; Arish Lim, Pureto Rico.

Kamaria has also had the honor of dancing at a number of private and public engagements including Culture Fest, Mediterrianean Echoes and the Renaissance Faire at the Tamarack in W.V.
